Premature Ovarian Insufficiency, also called Primary Ovarian Insufficiency or POI, occurs when ovarian activity reduces before the age of 40. It can affect menstrual cycles, hormone levels, fertility and long-term health. At StemRx IVF, we provide sensitive evaluation, clear guidance and personalised care based on your individual needs and future plans.
Understanding POI
Premature Ovarian Insufficiency, often shortened to POI, is a condition in which the ovaries function less regularly before the age of 40. It may be associated with irregular or absent menstrual periods, lower estrogen levels and reduced fertility.
POI is sometimes referred to as primary ovarian insufficiency. It is not exactly the same as menopause, because ovarian function may occasionally continue or resume intermittently in some people.
An early and sensitive assessment is important because POI can affect reproductive plans as well as bone health, cardiovascular health, emotional wellbeing and quality of life.
Symptoms vary from person to person. Some people experience changes gradually, while others may notice menstrual changes more suddenly.
POI can have several possible causes. In many cases, a clear cause is not identified.
Genetic or chromosomal factors
Autoimmune conditions
Previous chemotherapy or radiation treatment
Ovarian surgery
Certain infections or medical conditions
Family history of early ovarian insufficiency
Your specialist may recommend investigations based on your age, symptoms, family history and medical background. Identifying relevant factors can guide appropriate fertility counselling, health monitoring and long-term care.
Diagnosis involves a clinical assessment and may include more than one test, particularly when menstrual changes are recent or causes need further evaluation.

Further investigations may be recommended depending on your individual history and clinical findings.
POI management is not limited to fertility planning. Reduced estrogen can have implications for bone health, cardiovascular health, sexual health and emotional wellbeing. Your care plan should address your individual symptoms, long-term health and reproductive goals.
POI can significantly reduce fertility, but fertility counselling should be individualised. In some cases, ovarian activity may be intermittent. A fertility specialist can help you understand available pathways based on your diagnosis, health, treatment history and family-building goals.
